The Trap of “The Rush”

In design, we often have rush projects. They are the most likely to need an extra tweak or two before final production. I think that this has a lot to say about how we view time and rushing things.

In our designer world, we tend to be very particular about our designs and design spaces. We try to keep our artboards fairly clean (at least clean for how we operate). We have a process for the rhyme and reason of how we create our designs.

However, when alarms blares and the panic lights come on for a rush job… All systems of flow are out the window. We tend to lose quality control and emotional stability for the next few hours (that’s a joke. kinda.)

But, how often do we live life like that? (that’s a lot of “L’s” in that sentence.)
Seriously though, how often do we live like the panic lights are on and alarms are blaring? How often are we living, or rather existing, in survival mode?

Let’s be honest. The dogs (and cats, if you have them) need to be kept alive. The humans we’ve produced need to be kept alive. We need to be kept alive. While remaining alive, we need to be kind, productive, sensitive, but not too sensitive, mindful, critical-thinking members of society.

We get stuck in this loop of production and rush, that once we stop to relax, we see the mess that our rushing has left behind. Which then leaves us discouraged and unable to relax… starting the cycle back over.

What would happen if you slowed down?

Would the world stop? No.
Would you die? No, you are not a hummingbird.
Would you be criticized for not still running at 250% capacity? No.

You would be human. You would be, actually, keeping yourself alive. Prioritizing rest and centering your focus is a vital part of humanity and our functionality.

This week, I encourage you to rest. Take a breath. Slow down for a few minutes. Just rest.

Much love,
Dace
